Ten cents worth of water

Today we wanted to see who could balance the most drops of water on a 10 cent piece before it broke the surface tension of the water and spilled on the bench. Most people were able to add about 60 drops of water!

I wonder what would happen if you tried it again at home with detergent in the water???

Rollerball Champions (Forces Homework Task)

We had a lot of great rollerball machines built. There were lots of creative ideas – ramps, sticky substances, fluids, narrow tubes and more. Quite a lot of people managed to get the ball to take close to the 20 second goal.

LEON was the winner of the contest. His ball took 20.1 s to reach the bottom. Click on this link to see how he did it.

There were several other fantastic constructions. Click here to see them.

Miracles and the Laws of Science

Today we looked at the testimony of Dr Sean George about his ‘impossible’ complete recovery from cardiac arrest. The interesting thing about this story is the amount of medical documentation supporting his testimony. Science is heavily influenced by naturalistic thinking. Naturalists struggle to explain Sean’s story.

  • Your srtucture must stand by itself
  • It must not be higher than 70 cm or wider than 70 cm.
  • The marble must pass through a minimum of 4 different materials/structures.
Make a video of your device in action to show to the class on the due date. You can use a digital camera or mobile phone to make the video.

Plants are cool under the microscope

We looked at onion, banana and rhubarb tissue under the microscope. It was really fascinating. I especially liked looking at the onion cells. I recognized the cell walls and Mr Wright showed me the nuclei. (James)

The nucleus and cell walls of onion cells are clearly visible under the microscope.

Matchbox microscopes

Today we learned how to make a simple microscope from a matchbox and a drop of water as a lens. It only took a few minutes to make. We looked at a twig. It was a bit blurry because the plastic wasn’t all that clear and we smeared the petroleum jelly around too much, but we were able to see a magnified image of the twig. (Curtis)

Exploring the microscopic world

Today we were exploring how to use a microscope. We were looking at lots of different prepared slides. It’s amazing seeing what a birds feather, a reptile’s skin and blood look like under the microscope.

The bird feather looked like a spider web with lumps and little seedy things in between them.

The blood looks like a little red seed with lumps. In it is a reddy/ purply colour with two separate sections.  (Anna)

Writing poetry in Science

We have been learing how Scientists classify the myriad of creatures God has made in order to help understand them. We concluded the unit by writing a poem to God about His creativity. Some of the poems we wrote are attached.

Amazing Father-Son Project

A realy cool video about a father and son launching a video camera into space and refinding it. They had a weather balloon and  a video camera in an insulated container (because it is very cold in space) so they could watch what happened.  Click here to watch it yourself.
